Phuket Island, Thailand

Household altars seen everywhere:

We were in Thailand in 2005, but in Bangkok. Phuket is a small island connected by a bridge to mainland Thailand. It is full of tourists and massage parlors. Parts of this island where devastated by a December 26, 2004 tsunami.

We traveled by boat across the Phang Nga Bay viewing the limestone mountains, mangrove forests, and the blue ocean. We saw Khao Ping Gun (James Bond Island), where the movie The Man With a Golden Gun, was filmed in 1974.

We stopped and visited Koh Panui water village, a Muslim overwater village built on stilts and connected by wooded walkways.

We also visited the Wat Tham Suwan Kuha cave temple observing their statues, and resident monkeys. Wonderful day!

We are Don and Ann Barnes. We have had many travel experiences over the years, mostly for work. We are first timers going around-the-world hoping to test out Magellan’s theory. In the past several years we have had close calls with multiple cancers, car accidents, and the likes. These experiences along with Ann’s father’s mantra, “We have never regretted the things we have experienced, only those that we didn’t”, have all brought us to this point in our lives. It is a good time to just do it.
